   When used in my index.php file the_excerpt(); is appending the title, date, author and then the content.

   Anyone know why this would happen?

   yep...for me too outputs some data if excerpt is empty.

   I have a problem with it displaying source code that is not in the post content when there is no excerpt present.

   Specifically I use the "add this" plugin and the javascript to call that is showing when I use the_excerpt().

   If I place content in the post excerpt field then it works as expected.
