The new "privacy" option (7 posts)

I came across this at Lorelle on WordPress blog:

Another interesting feature found under Options > General is the new privacy option. Click the check box to get full SEO features such as inclusion in search engines and tag directories. It states: I would like my blog to appear in search engines like Google and Technorati, and in public listings around WordPress.com.

and then this from a follow up link:

A Little Privacy — Matt Last night we rolled out the first pass at our basic privacy functions. There is now a checkbox on your General Options page that says “I would like my blog to appear in search engines like Google and Technorati, and in public listings around WordPress.com.

Here's the deal. I just updated to WP 2.0.1 yesterday and had WP 2.0 prior to that; in either version I never had that option, I cannot find it anywhere on my Options >> General page or any other Options page.

    Why am I missing this?

    Thanks

  2. Because they're talking about WordPress.COM which uses a customized version of WordPress MU. ;)

Why wouldn't the WP Devs include this for the common user who uses their full version?

  4. Because it already does. Options -> Writing -> Update Services

I was wondering if that was same thing but I only have ping-o-matic listed there, nothing else. Is there something else I should include as well, perhaps you may suggest what you yourself use?

I'm glad you brought this up anyhow because I had a question regarding that. I've had my blog for about 4 months now and other than visitors to my site who I myself invited, how exactly do I verify that my blog is auto-pinging via the ping-o-matic? I have yet to encounter a new and unknown visitor so as you can imagine I'm basically all by my lonesome in this great wide blogosphere.

Nevermind, please completely ignore the post of mine directly above this one, but answer this instead if you would:

I am interested in the original question here. I understand that the "privacy" option is available at wordpress.com. The option fits my needs perfectly, but my preference woult be to host a "private" blog on my own site using WordPress software. I really like the features, plug-ins, etc. I really am interested in using it as a personal knowledge management product, with access limited to a very select group of people.

I have seen the post above concerning
Options -> Writing -> Update Services, but it does not appear to me to provide the complete privacy option available at wordpress.com. I guess that I have 2 questions:

    1. Can I currently implement something like the wordpress.com "privacy" setting on my site without sacrificing functionality like posting using software like BlogDesk?

    2. If not, are there plans to implement the privacy option in future WordPress software releases?

Thanks for helping a newbie on this!
