   Is it possible to have a small photo on the blog
   and add a read more,
   and then get the full story and bigger photo in the single?

   How do you control the difference between blog and single?

   This is the normal feature in fex news and articles

   Yes but I'd suggest looking for a featured posts theme (or plugin) that does this for you rather than trying to build one yourself.

   How do you control the difference between blog and single?

   Assuming you mean the difference between a post-listing page (archive) and a single post, via templates.
