Has anyone seen or used a theme similar to the online free textbook theme at ck12.org? They do not "open source" the code for their platform and there is a huge and immediate need for a textbook theme that could be used by anyone to develop and deliver textbooks online. I've searched extensively and found nothing that is really open and responsive. Any suggestions? Anyone working on a theme like this?

    Thanks

Looked at hundreds of themes but nothing I've found has the right combination of design elements... If I can't find anything, I'll buckle down and try to adapt the responsive theme to do what I want. This is a huge need right now as lots of authors of print textbooks want to move to free or cheap online versions, and lots of nonprofits are moving toward using and offering such books.

    Thanks

Can you define what you mean by a "textbook theme".

Easiest way is to take a look at the setup at: http://www.ck12.org for one of their textbooks. You don't need to register, just click on student or educator and pick a subject. They all pretty much follow the same format...

I doubt you will get all of that specialised functionality in a theme - especially a free one. I'd suggest that you look for a theme that suits your market sector in terms of color & layout and then use plugins for any additional functionality

Additionally, while the webpages seen are deceptively simple, the source code is very complex- way beyond my abilities. I could bring some of the functionality shown into play by addapting a preexisting theme, but not all. One of the more interesting and probably most difficult to implement is creating your own flexbook using bits and pieces from several of their existing books. That plus adding your own content or even creating your own book from scratch.

They do a great job and their stuff is free including hosting at their site, and therein lies the rub: it has to be on their site and you can't modify the look and feel. For example, I think there is too much white space on their pages, and too large a space between sentences- easy enough to fix with one of the existing themes but it won't have the other components...

Thanks, esmi, I figured that would be the way to go.
