I've already deactivated all my plug-ins and that didn't help.

Have you tried resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems

I tried to find and do what was suggested using phpMyAdmin, but I couldn't find what was suggested ("In the table wp_options,under the option_name column (field) find the active_plugins row"). I'm a bit afraid to mess with it otherwise. I did try renaming the plugins folder to plugins.hold, creating a new plugins folder, logging in to WordPress admin, then deleting empty plugins and renaming plugins.hold back to plugins. It didn't work. I'm seriously considering asking my host to restore everything to the most recent backup and getting rid of this upgrade.

Did this problem begin immediately after an upgrade to 2.8.x? Have you tried switching to the default theme on the off-chance that this could be a theme-related problem?

I've encountered the same problem, it will save plain text no problem, but has problems with some characters which cause it to fail to save. Imparticularly, it is when I add captions to images that the problem occurs.

I am hosted with Site5 and have just moved over to them.
