template samples

Hi – I am a new WordPress user and know almost nothing about WordPress. I am looking for examples of templates where the main page is not blog-style but rather is just a flat page. I do not want blog entries on the main page. I want to have a main page that has links to a bunch of different blog users, and some other links, maybe in a 2-column format with the main area on the right and little links on the left. I do not think the styles at Alex’s web site are what I am looking for; it appears that those are all different presentations of the same thing (and are probably called “styles” and not “templates in WordPress parlance) – what I want is for the thing that’s presented to be different. I am looking for something that does not use fixed pixel-sizes or layouts; another way to say this might be that I want “floating” and not “absolute” layouts. I feel like I have not found the mother lode of WordPress templates. Even something in the default WordPress style might be OK. I hope I am using the correct WordPress terminology here.
