I uploaded a theme and received a message that the template was missing. I looked at all the files and they were all there. What am I missing?

It was “dots” from Alex King. I wanted to use the structure there as a starting point for my own design.

I am not sure “dots” was ported to WP 1.5. Initially it was a “style” for WP1.2, not a theme for 1.5.
Pre-1.5 styles cannot be used with WP version 1.5.x unless you follow these instructions:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrade_1.2_to_1.5
