   taxonomy.php works fine, but I can't create one for my 'genres' taxonomy called taxonomy-genres.php, it just defaults back to archive.php

   Has this feature been deprecated or something?

   I have the same problem. Both custom taxonomy archives and terms revert back to archive.php

   Surprisingly if I use:
   category-mytaxonomy.php - it works fine, but if I save it as:
   taxonomy-mytaxonomy.php - the page uses archive.php to show posts

   Can anyone help?
