How long do comments stay in the trash once marked as Trash? Is it indefinitely until I do my chores and take out the trash? (My preference would be that.) Or does the trash get emptied by WordPress automatically at some point?

The Trash (comments, posts, etc.) is emptied every 30 days by default. There are ways to change that behavior: http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/7736/turn-off-automatic-trash-deletion
