When I sogn onto my admin, I see it shows 117 tags. What are these for. I understand for a post these tags help with search, but why do I need them in a list. Can I utilize these some how?

When I sogn onto my admin, I see it shows 117 tags. What are these for. I understand for a post these tags help with search, but why do I need them in a list. Can I utilize these some how?

I use them like categories. Categories for (for example) musical style and tags for bandname.
