Tag and Category slugs cannot be the same

I can’t seem to find any way around this online. It seems this has been an issue for over 3 years but without any word of a fix. How is this possible for such a base level requirement?

I have a tag for each character in a competitive video game for any article that talks about them. However, I want to create a section for character guides that are centred specifically around each character. My problem is that it won’t allow that.

sitename.com/tag/name and sitename.com/characters/name cannot both exist it seems because the slug is the same. How do I get around this? I’d really rather not screw up my URL structure with numbers for something like this.
