TablePress - "unclear data" error when saving changes (14 posts)

After changing the options: pagination, search etc. the following message is displayed:
Speichern fehlgeschlagen: AJAX call successful, but unclear data. Try again while holding down the "Shift" key.

I then hold down the Shift Key while hitting save and the table is saved.
    ...???...

    Hi,

    thanks for this post.

This error means that there was something wrong in the "AJAX request" that the plugin performs to save the table and options without having to reload the page.
When the "Save Changes" button is pressed while the "Shift" key is pressed, a different saving mechanism is used (plain HTTP POST instead of AJAX).

So, if everything was saved correctly, there should be no problem here, as this could have been a temporary issue. If this happens again and you can reproduce it, please don't hesitate to contact me again, even directly. I would really like to check your site directly, if this happens again!

    Thanks!
    Tobias

Hi Tobias, thanks for the reply.

Yes, the problem happens all the time I try to save this particular table. The table in question is a 'big' table that also gives me other problems with the plugin: headers, search, sort and pagination missing from the table.

    I will email you now.
    Thanks again,
    Juana

    Hi,

as indicated in my email, I assume that something is wrong here with the JavaScript, so that the "good" saving mechanism (where the "max_input_vars" problem will not happen) does not work.

Once we find more details, I will update this thread accordingly.

    Regards,
    Tobias

    Hi there Tobias,

Thanks for the plugin, it's great. Unfortunately I have the same problem. When saving a simple text table with no headers or footers I get this message:

Saving failed: AJAX call failed: parsererror - SyntaxError: Unexpected token <. Try again while holding down the “Shift” key.

With the shift key it works. Do you have any more details yet?

    Will

    Hi Will,

thanks for your post, and sorry for the trouble.
Is this happening with the latest version 0.8.1-beta?

If yes, I'd like to take a direct look at this in your WP admin area, to try to find out what causes this. In order to do that, can you please contact me via email (you can find my address in the main plugin file "tablepress.php").

    Thanks!
    Tobias

    Hi,

just for everybody else following this thread:
After working directly on this with Will, we found that a custom plugin modification caused this, as that raised an error message that broke the AJAX request here.
Fixing the issue in that other plugin also fixed the saving error.

    Best wishes,
    Tobias

    Hi Tobias,

i just installed the Version 0.9-RC and imported all Tables from WP-Table-reloaded as you descripe on tablepress.org.

I am having the same Error like the others here when i am trying to save some changes in the table.

But i cannot find any problems with the Ajax. Would you please give me an idea?

    Thanks
    Uwe

    Hi Uwe,

sorry to hear that you suffer from the same problem.
Can you check if there are any errors in the JavaScript console (this link might help: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors )
If that does not help, can you please try again after temporarily deactivating all other plugins and switching to the WP default theme Twenty Twelve? This is to rule out any interference from another plugin.

If that also does not help, I'd like to take a direct look at your admin area. In that case, please send me an email with the account info (my address is in the main plugin file "tablepress.php").

    Regards,
    Tobias

I too am getting this error. It shows in red on save and fades which doesn't allow me to capture the text, so had to take a screen shot.

"saving failed: ajax call failed: parsererror - syntaxerror: unexpected token F. try again while holding down the shift key"

I did import a large table, 2939 rows, 10 columns. It took a long time to save, initially. Took longer to save when I added a two column pre-sort
    "aaSorting": [[ 3, 'desc' ], [2,'asc']]
then errored out when I changed to 3 column pre-sort
    "aaSorting": [[ 0, 'desc' ],[1,'asc'], [2,'asc']]

hard to maneuver on admin page, scroll, until I collapsed the "Table Content" section.

I even had a WP fail during attempted saving ( I can't replicate so this is based on memory) but it said something about post size exceeded.

Will keep looking and keep you updated. Just donated a coffee to you before all this started. Gonna upgrade you to a beer here in a second

Splitting my imports into the table to start small, 23 rows, saved successfully. Then 1000, good. Then 2000, yes! Finally the full height of 2936 rows and received error again.

Will keep chugging away at other configurations. Maybe there is a size limit?

Went ahead and broke my table into 5 different tables via grouping. Everything moving fast with rows 1,000 or less

    Hi Paul,

thanks for your post, and sorry for the trouble.

Yes, tables with high number of cells (several thousand, as in your case) are not handled that nicely in TablePress (or in the browser), as the browser has a lot of work to do with managing so many thousand input fields.
There's no direct limit of the number of rows or cells in TablePress, but the available PHP memory on the server can be a limiting factor in practice.

I will send you an email, as I like to take a direct look at this. Maybe I can find something to make the run smoother.

    Regards,
    Tobias
