Switching to WordPress while keeping site active (9 posts)

    Hi,

I initially purchased my domain at Godaddy.com but it's currently hosted elsewhere. I've now purchased hosting at Godaddy.com and have uploaded WordPress to the account. I've also chosen a theme to customize and have uploaded it to the themes folder via FTP. I have it set up to update the DNS settings manually.

What I'm looking to do is rebuild my site for the same domain using WordPress and this new theme without interrupting the live site, which, again, is hosted elsewhere. When I try to log in as an admin from Godaddy I'm taken to the live site, since it's active. Is the rebuild something I should do with a subdomain?

    Thanks so much.

Yes you can do it with a subdomain or if GoDaddy has a IP address which points to your GoDaddy hosting acccount, then you can use the IP address to access the new site.

Do remember to set back to the previous DNS settings.

Thank you. When you say to "set back to the previous DNS settings," I assume you mean making it automatic instead of manual, for the subdomain?

    Thanks again.

I believed you would like point your domain to your old site which is currently hosted somewhere else other than GoDaddy, while you work on your new site at a subdomain level.

Hello, In very simple computer language could you please tell me how to do the steps you said in your previous comment:

"Yes you can do it with a subdomain or if GoDaddy has a IP address which points to your GoDaddy hosting acccount, then you can use the IP address to access the new site.

Do remember to set back to the previous DNS settings."

I am new to this and am experiencing the exact same issue except my original site is through Fatcom.com not Godaddy.com

NOTE: I have already installed WP and have set up my page etc, but I can't seem to link it to my http://www.____.com account. It still shows the old information on that original account.

Thank you so much for your assistance.

I'm abit confuse with your latest post which is the opposite of what you wanted to do in the first post.

I think it is better to summarize it up and put it in bullet form.

What do you want to do with the old site?

Hi, JungleSpace, that last comment was a new question from someone else, which is why it has different elements than my initial question. Thank you for answering for me. I appreciate it.

Sorry...I am new to this. Here is what I am trying to do.

What do you want to do with the old site?
-keep the same http://www._____.com address name
    -

What do you want to do with the new site?
-have all new content with WordPress (that people will see when they click on my old http://www.___.com address. Not http://www.___Com/xxx/xxx/ etc.

Does that make more sense? I thought that was what was being asked. Sorry, but thanks for all your help. This is good!

@shortdivision, sorry didnt realise your post was being used by another member.

@stegadmin, creating a new post/thread for your issue is better because you wouldnt want to spam the original post owner with unrelated email notifications. do create a new thread and post a follow-up link here. thanks.
