Switching servers, but creating a new WP site first (7 posts)

I have a need to create a new WordPress site for an existing domain name. But I want to build the site in WordPress before relocating the dns nameservers. I have a couple of people in different geographic areas that I need to have work on our new site before it goes live.

I have bought space with a different webhost and I have an ip address that I can use to access the cpanel for the new site. I have been able to install WP from cpanel. However, I can only access the WP installation when the nameservers have been pointed to the new webhost.

I do need to keep the old site live before swinging it over to the new site.

So, how can I access and configure the new WP installation only using the ip address numbers and without having the dns nameservers listing pointing at the new webhost?

    Thanks!

    Charles

    Thanks esmi.

I followed that page, before posting here, and still was not able to access the wordpress install.

You use the ip address for now. Once the dn has been changed and is resolving properly, change the site url in the install as outlined in that Codex page.

    Thank for responding esmi.

Unfortunately I may not have been sufficiently clear in stating the exact nature of the problem.

Which is, I cannot access the WP installation using only the ip numbers given by the hosting provider. Only when the nameservers are pointed at the new host can I then get into the WP site.

Ah - I see. Have you asked your hosts if they can provide you with a temporary url? The hosts I use do this automatically.

No, I haven't. I did not know that was even possible. I will call them tomorrow and find out. Thanks for the suggestion!
