    I am working with a client who has a site on GoDaddy built with DreamWeaver. She wants to convert to WordPress. Do I have to take her old site down and start over? Is there a way to convert without doing all that?

    I did talk with GoDaddy and they said I could build the new site in a sub-directory but not quite sure of the steps.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    you will need to 'start over'.

    however, you could develop the 'new' site in a sub-directory, as suggested, without disrupting the old site;
    and once finished, move the wordpress installation to the main directory http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress
