I've recently been added on as a contributor to the GPP Slideshow plugin but I am unable to commit updates to the plugin repository. Is the original contributor/creator of the plugin the only person able to commit changes? If so, what's the benefit of being listed as a contributor if I don't have SVN access? Thanks.

Being listed as a contributor (do you mean Author?) just means you worked on it. You have to be added as a Committer.
