I'm trying to move away from Posterous because of their acquisition by Twitter, uncertain future, disappearance of support and reduced performance. The handwriting is all over the wall there.

I've been trying wordpress.com lately (douglerner.wordpress.com) and posting to both Posterous and WordPress. And I have everything imported from Posterous into WordPress.

I had been thinking of going with wordpress.com and mapping my domain to my blog, but I ran into 3 issues which have turned into show stoppers. And I wonder if there are plugins or other solutions out there in the WordPress community if I host my own blog at Hostgator.

    (1) Several friends I've checked either don't get my wordpress.com blog notifications or they end up in their spam folder or they get the notifications sporadically. This doesn't happen with Posterous, and I can't help but think it's a problem with wordpress.com - their headers or something. Anyway, if subscribers don't reliably get my posts there's no point, so this alone is a show-stopper.

    (2) The invite system at wordpress.com is buggy. For example, I have someone showing still waiting to accept the invitation in one place, yet see her as subscribed by email in another.

    (3) The other main problem I don't know if there is a solution for or not. Many of my subscribers are friends in their 80s and 90s. I have to make this very simple for them. I was just doing a screen sharing with one of these friends who had received some, but not all, of the wordpress.com notifications. It seems even though there is a clear "Comment" button there he replied to many of my messages, and so the messages went nowhere. In Apple Mail you don't see the address you are replying to - it just shows the name of my blog, so he couldn't even tell it was being sent to a "do-not-reply" address. So what I'm hoping is that there is some plugin or something that will let subscribers reply by email instead of having to click on Comment and go to the web to add a comment.

    (4) Of somewhat less importance, but would be great if it was possible, would be an easy way to add subscribers without having to make these people go through a complicated web process to get subscribed to my posts.

Any thoughts on any of this would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    doug

A possible solution is to try moving to Facebook or Google+ instead of using a blog to keep in touch with your friends. That is what you are trying to do isn't it - keep in touch with your friends?

Facebook and Google+ are so completely different from WordPress as far as presence, notifications of new post, reply, search, customization, branding, features and, well, everything, I don't see how they can even be compared. It's not even apples and oranges. It's apples and elephants. :)

Plus it wouldn't help with ANY of the problems I mentioned above.

    Thanks for the thought though!

Interesting point of view. I had opened a Facebook account many years ago then deactivated it for 3 years because I had found it too difficult to use! But over the last two months I have reactivated my Facebook account and begun to look at it differently - managed to get it to work, understand how to use Facebook.

I don't know about wordpress.com as I have never used it. All of us here are on self hosted sites using WordPress. If you were on a self hosted site one possibility you could look it is your mailbox. Your mailbox has to be activated and you will have to install an SMTP plugin to get your all emails going correctly.

I also use FaceBook - but messages get lost in the news feed flow and tumble. For example, I was in the hospital 2 weeks ago with a heart attack. I would say that 98% of my FaceBook friends don't know about that because they overlooked it in the newsfeed with everything else going on. Then it flies by and is scrolled off the end of the page. No notifications of my post go out. And the information is lost.

But my Posterous subscribers definitely know because they each received an email notification. And if they return to my blog it's all there. Because it is MY blog, not just a newsfeed mixture of posts from all their friends.

I also have a self-hosted site. I created it the other day and imported everything from here to it (douglerner.net). It looks fine, but post via-email functionality is extremely limited. You can't post image attachments. And tags are not handled. In fact, all I could get to work was posting the subject of my message - it didn't even post the body. So post via email works better at wordpress.com. I looked around for some plugins for this but didn't notice any.

    Thanks,

    doug

Yes I noticed that about Facebook, some of my friends have to search for my posts.

You can post your queries about wordpress.com on their forum at http://en.forums.wordpress.com/

Well, my main question here was how to get some needed features at my self-hosted wordpress site (douglerner.net)

But it seems the post via-email support is very primitive (no image attachments, no tagging via email, etc.).

So maybe my self-hosted wordpress site is unworkable.

    Thanks,

Sorry, I seemed to have misunderstood your request. You can try these plugins

    1. WP Better Emails - looks like your can place banners in your emails
    2. Mailing List - looks like it supports attachments
    3. Newsletter Manager

I have not tried any of them but from the documentation they may meet your requirements. I did a search under Add Plugins with the phrase "email attachments" and you will find more but they need a fee.

Some of them automatically set up SMTP plugin for you so if they don't please do ensure that an SMTP plugin is installed in WordPress. You will find emails not being delivered for these main reasons:-

    1. No SMTP plugin installed - required if you are sending to an email address hosted by Google Apps. Do note ...@gmail.com address will work with or without both mailbox and or SMTP plugin so if you test with a gmail.com address, successful results can be misleading.

    2. You server mailbox is not activated - normally creating an email address in your server will activate you mailbox. If you are not sure ask your host tech support.

    3. Your host sever firewall is blocking out going emails. Please do contact your host tech support and ask them to disable the block. Furthemore, some host will block outgoing emails if the 'from' email address in not defined in you server eg if your domain name is mydomain.com and your from email address is like sales@myothersite.com.

    4. All fields must be filled up eg from, to , reply to, ... otherwise some host will block the email from going out.

I do hope this helps you. Then again, were you looking for ways to post on to your blog with an email?

Thank you for your post, peter.

Thanks for checking out the plugins. Those seem to be outgoing emails. What I'm really look for are ways to post and reply by email. In other words, incoming emails.

    Thanks,

Thanks. I had looked at GerryWorks before - it doesn't handle attachments.

I had not seen Postie. I'll check that out.

    Thanks,

Peter, I wanted to thank you for pointing Postie out to me.

It works perfectly! It properly receives and embeds images and YouTube videos. The settings are very easy. And you don't even need to set a cron job - it checks automatically every so-many minutes.

    Thanks!
