Support » Installing WordPress » Suggestion for those struggling with 2.7 installations

  • If you’re like me, and it looks like there is a healthy percentage here, you all should consider doing what I did.

    1) DOWNGRADE back to 2.6.5 — you can find a download here directly from wordpress’ archives, and doing this restored my blog (as well as my sanity) instantly. Keep in mind, this leaves you susceptible to hacks, which I can attest to. But doing backups immediately after each post with an outdated version can give you the upper hand with a quick re-install.

    2) Start a new, test wordpress blog. For whatever reason, this has been the only release that does not work for me. I found more peace of mind knowing that my blog remains online while I try to find ways around updating to 2.7 with a Guinea Pig test site at my disposal.

Even if you don’t downgrade, starting a test blog can pay dividends. Especially if you receive a large number of hits. So if you’re still struggling, give this consideration.

  • Two things that seem to be the biggest culprits in the 2.7 upgrade process:

    1. ALL Plugins were not deactivated. Solution: deactivate ALL plugins before starting the upgrade.
    2. ALL WordPress files were not uploaded completely. Solution: revisit Steps 7 and 8 of Upgrading WordPress Extended.

    1) DOWNGRADE back to 2.6.5

Can you add a point to the top? It might make step 1 redundant.

    0) BACKUP AND BE PREPARED TO RESTORE YOUR FILES AND DATABASE TO A PRE-UPGRADE STATE.

I have not had any problems with upgrading 3 blogs from 2.6.5 to 2.7. I use SVN and the process was seamless. BUT with any version upgrade you need to really understand how to backup/restore everything to a fully operational pre-upgrade state.

Having that option really is the best safety net.

Other than that, I like item #2. Having a test blog is a good practice before you dive in.
