  • In future, make your customisations to a child theme.

    Wow so does that mean i just cant upgrade. ok im like super new but i learn quick, lml….is there a tutorial or something explaining how to use a “child” or what a “child” theme actually implies.

    Child theme basically does use the templates from the parent

    mostly you must have made your customization on style.css and functions.php so follow the link esmi has in his post and create child theme folder and copy the two files in your child theme folder and other files you customized.

    then open style.css in editor
    and change

    top part

    /*
    Theme Name: name
    Description: Child theme for the theme name
    Author: Your name here
    Template: parent theme
    */

    @import url(“../themename/style.css”);

    Check if your child theme works before you update

    depending what is updated you can make changes in child theme

    Thank you for all this help. i do apologize for my apparent ignorance here. I understand how frustrating it may be to assist the newbies or getting questions that seems dumb. this should be the last time i bother you guys on this matter. I am trying to get this all done before the morning about another 10 hours.

    1. would it be better if i just delete all my themes and plugins and start from scratch. i wrote down the few changes i made and the plugins im using

    2. is there a specific child theme i should use for suffusion since i also use the buddy press plugin

    3. is there an order i should download the themes in (parent theme or child them 1st)

    Again, i thank you and do apologize

    I want to upgrade my suffusion theme but it says i will lose all customizations made….lol, thats alot.

    That message is a part of WP, not Suffusion – you will see it for any theme you want to upgrade.

    But here is the catch: in case of Suffusion if all of your changes are made through the options screens, you will not lose any of them, because they are stored in the database, not as files. Upgrades only impact files. But if you have tweaked any files, you will lose those.

    Now, if you have made CSS file changes only, then there are two ways to preserve them:

    1. Put your custom CSS under Blog Features → Custom Includes → Custom Styles. There is a very detailed tutorial for this on Suffusion’s site.
    2. Or you can use a child theme as suggested. In case you want to do so, be sure to read this tutorial in addition to whatever you are reading.

    wow. thanks a lot…so i can just go on and upgrade and skip all the other stuff? i had only changed things in the suffusion options (background and header customizations. but is it best to use a child theme. i doubt i will ever want to change i think it’s the best for my buddy press plugin (lol, unless you can suggest a better “free” theme for me)

    Yes, you can simply upgrade.

    There is a specific plugin to make BP work with Suffusion, but that will require a child theme.

    i already have almost every buddy press plugin activated and the specific 1 your speaking of…is this why my forum doesn’t work. im thinking i need to delete all of them theme and plugins for BP and start from scratch or no. i dont want to complicate anything…and you are truely awesome thanks for all this wonderful help and prompt responses.
