My subscribers have gotten used to getting email notifications of new posts, which typically were received within minutes of a my publishing a new post. I subscribe as well, so that I can see what my readers see. Last weekend I upgraded to 3.6.1 and activated a couple of new JetPack features (I believe they were: Carousel, Connect, Likes, Tiled Galleries, Mobile Theme, Omnisearch and—strangely, as it was already installed and working prior to the upgrade—Subscriptions).

When I published my next post (2 days ago), I noticed that I a notification never went out (I didn’t get one, and some readers pointed out they didn’t get one either). I published another post yesterday and again, no notification went out.

I haven’t seen any recent similar issues in the forums.

I maintain my own site and WP installation, but my technical prowess is middling at best, so you may have to spell out the more obscure steps, if any. Any help appreciated!

  • If you are using JetPack subscriptions, you need to ask on their forum:

    http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack

Including a link to your site will help them help you.

Thank you for the quick feedback. I’ll post my problem in the JP forum as well.

That said, I don’t know whether it’s a JetPack problem or a WordPress 3.6.1 upgrade problem; I just mentioned everything that changed between when I had a working subscriber notification system and when I did not.

    Thanks again,

    Michael

Did you upgrade from WordPress 3.6 or something older? There is a bug with the phpmailer library that’s included with WordPress 3.6 and 3.6.1, but it only effects WP on servers using Qmail as their MTA.

I’m sorry to say I don’t remember whether it was 3.6 or 3.5.x. Is there some way for me to find out (an update log, perhaps)?

I’ve tried to see if my server uses Qmail by going to my hoster’s (Webhostinghub) Cpanel to see what I can find, but I’m feeling more and more like a clueless noob.

What should I do to find answers to these questions and/or resolve this problem.

Apologies for being *that* customer tonight…

If you can, deactivate the Jetpack plugin, or for that matter, all plugins and try a default theme like TwentyTweleve or TwentyThirteen.

As far as Qmail, probably the easiest way to find out is to ask your host. And no, unfortunately there’s no upgrade log generated by WordPress.

I deactivated the Jetpack plugin and most others (save a trusted couple that give the site necessary functionality), and I’ve changed from the twenty-ten theme I used to twenty-twelve. Now, of course, I’ve got no notification at all. Where do I go from here?

    Thanks for your help,

    Michael

Am asking my host about Qmail now.

I suppose you could try something like Check Email to send a test email.

    Am installing Check Email now.

My host says my server uses exim, not Qmail.

Just ran Check Email, and the email was successfully sent (or so it says).

It was not, however, received by me.

    Check Email
The test email has been sent by WordPress. Please note this does NOT mean it has been delivered. See wp_mail in the Codex for more information. The headers sent were:
    MIME-Version: 1.0\r\n
    From: #####@#######.com\r\n
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=”UTF-8″\r\n
    SMTP server: localhost

    Send test email to: ######

    Use standard headers

    MIME-Version: 1.0
    From: mtblack@blackenedroots.com
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=”UTF-8″

Resolved. Odd, but embarrassingly simple in the end.

I called my host (webhostinghub) and it turns out there was no problem with email at all—it was indeed going out. It turns out that both me and the two subscribers who told me they didn’t get the usual notification email had all of our recent WordPress emails end up in our spam folders (we all have the same berkeley.edu-supplied gmail, so apparently berkeley.edu or gmail tweaked their spam filtering settings).

Oh, man, yeah, the obvious! 🙂 I should have thought of that. Sometimes I don’t see the forest for the trees…glad you got if solved.

Thanks for your help and patience, Doug. On the bright side, I learned about the helpful Check Email plugin—very handy!

    Marking as resolved
