I'm trying to find the best environment to develop a multisite/buddypress website and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for using sub domains. Ideally it would be something that I could run off a usb flash drive. I've tried DesktopServer, but it doesn't allow me to use it on a flash drive and I need to purchase the full version to utilize the multisite features.

You'd have to edit your local hosts files to redirect subdomains to your localhost version of WP.

That's what I was afraid of. I'm going to see if I can do an install on Portable Virtual Box.
Does anyone have any other tips for setting up a development environment for a multisite?
