I'd like to configure WordPress to be able to handle all of the following as different sites and I can't find a configuration that will allow it. Is this possible?

    http://www.example.com
    http://subdomain.example.com
    http://www.example.com/subdir/
    http://subdomain.example.com/subdir/
    http://www.example.fr
    http://www.example.fr/subdir/
    http://www.otherexample.com
    http://www.otherexample.com/subdir/

Obviously, "subdomain" and "subdir" could be any string based on varying needs.

I tried to install WP Multi Network (http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-multi-network/) but that didn't appear to help as I was trying to configure various sites.

    Any advice?

Yes, but not with Domain Mapping. You need multiple networks to implement what you have described.

Meaning multiple installs of WordPress? Or is there a way to do it with a single installation? I've scoured the web and haven't found any means of doing it in a single installation, and that's the preference if we can do it.

Multiple networks in one install. There are plugins for that.
