Subdirectory Multisite with BuddyPress, installed on a subdomain? (2 posts)

I'm putting together a Multisite WordPress network with BuddyPress for my school, and trying to work out how to set up the install. I've started it up a few times on my own host to play with it, but not really been happy with the way it's been working.
If the school's site is like this (example URLs of course):

    http://www.school.edu

Can I set up a subdirectory Multisite install on:

    http://buddypress.school.edu

so that the blog address structures will look like this:

    http://buddypress.school.edu/mrteacher
    http://buddypress.school.edu/msprincipal
    http://buddypress.school.edu/johnnygrade1
    etc?

Is that subdomain going to screw with the multisite? Or will it be fine as long as they're attached to their own databases?

That setup should work fine. We run a project with a similar setup.

    Main school site: http://gc.cuny.edu
    BP site: http://commons.gc.cuny.edu
    sub-blogs: http://blog1.commons.gc.cuny.edu

You'll see that it's a bit different because we use subdomains for our WP install, but that shouldn't make a difference for the WP install. WP itself doesn't care how many dots you have in the base domain - it could be http://this.is.a.totally.awesome.site.com.

The one caveat: if http://school.edu is running WP as well, it must be a separate installation from http://buddypress.school.edu. WP won't be able to handle both of these URL structures, in addition to the subdirectory blogs, within the same instance (at least not without a lot of rewrite magic).
