Meaning, you did everything right, it’s just that the menu is limited to 1 level. Also it’s placed in the sidebar which I don’t think it should because if users want a menu in sidebar’s area they can use the menu widget already. Anyway, this might be a design decision.
Meanwhile, if you know a little html, the work around is not to assign menu at all, then use text widget with your own handcoded custom menu.

There are lots of themes, good themes in the WP.org’s theme repo, I would try out different themes and see which one suit me the best, switching theme doesn’t cost a dime, just a few clicks.
Of course, I would use theme that the author is actively answering support questions. Hiring someone to take care of this for you is also a good option too, so you can concentrate on making the content.
