    Hi all,

I'm a non-techy and stupid newbie to WordPress, and could really use your advice on setting up the best structure.

    Here are my goals:

    a) To incorporate a blog on my website about 2 completely separate categories: X and Y. More specifically ...

    b) To have the home page on my website (index.html) include 2 separate links, corresponding with category X and category Y.

    c) When people click on the link for category X, they see a page where the posts and sub-categories pertain to only X. Likewise, when people click on the link for category Y, they see a different page where the posts and sub-categories pertain to only Y.

So - that is the story ... how would I accomplish this? Very specific guidance would be greatly appreciated .. like whether or not I should install 2 separate instances of wordpress; how I can get only 1 set of sub-categories appear on a page, etc.

    This stupid newbie thanks you!

If you really want just two links on the main index (as opposed to displaying some last posts!) then it is easy:
    a) in WP you can have as many categories as you wish
    c) clicking on a catgeory name (which means even on a hardcoded link to it in your main index) takes you to the display/listing of posts ONLY from thatcatgeory - WP does it automatically for you
c1) to display only the child categories of a parent category will take a bit more tweaking but it can be done
