Support » Fixing WordPress » Stuck in a loop – wp-admin routes to incorrect URL

  • Hi I’m hoping that someone can help me. I have taken over a WordPress site for a Scout group where I help out. Another leader set up the wordpress site with a temporary URL of beacon-scouts.com however the Scout Group literature and minibus has the existing url of 20thwalsallscouts.org.uk.

They say a little knowledge is dangerous and in this case it’s true. I set up a framed page forwarding service from the 20thwalsallscouts.org.uk domain host which worked fine, then I tried to be too clever and tried to change the url displayed on the wordpress site. Stupidly I changed both URL’s in the general settings to be 20thWalsallScouts.org.uk, and ever since, I have been stuck in a perpetual loop. I can’t log in to beacon-scouts.com/wp-admin, it just takes me to a temporary page on the 20thwalsallscouts.org.uk page. If I type beacon-scouts.com/wp-login.php, the login dialogue box appears, but as soon as I enter my user id and password and hit login, it takes me to the temporary page for 20thwalsallscouts.org.uk.

Unfortunately the guy who set up the original blog and beacon-scouts.com is off on long term sick and can’t be contacted.

I have read about connecting to the database via phpMyAdmin or via FTP, but understand that WordPress.com blogs don’t accept ftp connections.

If anyone out there can suggest a solution to this, I’d love to hear from you as I’m tearing my hair out at the moment.

Thanks kmessinger, I had looked at the link about changing the site url, but as the web administrator has gone off on long term sick leave and can’t be contacted, I don’t know how to access the site via phpMyAdmin or FTP.

When I try to log on using my user id and password, it just routes me to the temporary page set up on our domain host.

    I just don’t know how to proceed….

Without access to the database, the wordpress dashboard or the files by ftp there is nothing you can do. You might appeal to your hosts to give you access to the db.

Do you have your blog at wp.com?

Thanks kmessinger. I thought the site may have been set up as a WordPress.com blog, but it turns out to be self hosted. I didn’t even know who it is hosted with! I have tracked the url back to an IP address which came up as USA regsitered to: paidvm4.limedomains.com but whether they will open up the db to me remains to be seen. Thanks again for your help.
