I am trying to decide if multisite is the right option for me – I am looking to create a website where a select amount of people will each have their own blogs that feed into a main page that is organized by categories – ex are news, events, advice – and so on. Almost like a magazine layout on the homepage. Each individual blog should be able to have an ‘about’ or profile page. So I would like for the look of all of the blogs to be consistent, with options to upload logos or images on each blog. How easy it is to ‘lock down’ the ability to edit the templates, etc – I essentially want each blog to have limited permissions – is that a simple thing to do?

No individual site can edit the themes, if that’s what you mean. They can only use the themes you allow them to use, and they can’t change them.

They CAN change the categories, etc, and post, because they’re admins 🙂

how do I control what themes they have access to? for example I want theme A on the main site that will collect feed from all the other sites, then theme B on all of the other sites – I am trying to somewhat mimick what the NY times Blogs have done as far as structure/setup

If you network enable a theme, it’s available to all sites.

If you want to enable a theme on one site, go to Network Admin -> Sites and click on ‘edit’ for that site. On the new page, click on Themes, and you can enable themes per-site there.
