  • I’ve just moved my site from a Unix system to a Microsoft-IIS/5.0 server. I did everything as I should, my site seems to be working fine, but I have some strange experiences:

    – no matter what I did, I couldn’t make the pretty permlinks to work: so instead of http://www.mysite.com/2011/08/sample-post/ I had to use http://www.mysite.com/index.php/2011/08/sample-post/ everywhere – also links to categories, tags also needed the less prettier form. Can I fix this?

    – every time I update a plugin it asks for the ftp parameters – on the other site it just installed the updates every time without any prompt for the FTP details

    – also my site didn’t work (images didn’t show) until I have changed my theme’s cache folder’s rights to 777 from 755. I don’t understand why 777 is needed here, while 755 worked fine on the old server

    – also I had to change all of the folders rights inside /wp-content/uploads/ including the uploads folder to 777 instead of 755 or else picture uploading didn’t work at all from the Dashboard

    – sometimes while logged in as admin the Dashboard says I’m not allowed to see a page. If I refresh it shows up correctly – on the old server I never experienced this.

So the page now works on the new server, but I’m afraid of these strange things especially the 777 rights all around my site.

Do I have to make something extra to make my site work correctly, or did I miss something while moving it?
