Strange Error logs (5 posts)

After having my dedicated box crash for the 8th day in a row, I started doing some digging.

I find a number of entries in the error_log (10s of thousands) that say: Usage: file [-bcikLhnNsvz] [-f namefile] [-F separator] [-m magicfiles] file...
    file -C -m magicfiles

My host says that's to blame, but I can't find anything odd in the access_log for the same time.

Anyone know what's causing this, and how to track it back to something?

I know this is a WordPress or plugin issue, as that's the only code running on this box. Any help would be appreciated.

    Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

I'm still digging into it. But it appears to be caused by timthumb

I don't know specifically what, but I'm gonna head there in a bit to ask if anyone knows what's up.

For those who are interested - I tracked it back to an old version of timthumb (which is why it was only happening on some of my sites and not all)

If you're having this same error in your logs, update your timthumb script to the newer one.

After extensive testing, I've confirmed that's what the error was. (At least in my case.)
