Strange 404 problem (17 posts)

I'm not sure what is going on here. Google still has my old Joomla site indexed (after several months). When you click on one of those links, it redirects to my home page. But, if you type in http://mysite.com/1234, it gives an Apache 404 message.

The Joomla site was never on this server, it was with a different host.

There is a 404.php in the theme and it does not have a redirect in it of any kind. There are no 404 lines in the htaccess.

What steps can I take to make the old site links 404 out so Goggle can drop the old links?

Update: Just for kicks, I created an error document in the root and added a 404 line to htaccess. The behavior is still where Joomla paths will redirect to the WP home page and any other error will direct to the error document.

Why would you need example links?

Just thought it would be easier to try and find out what's going on directly rather than playing 20 questions, but no matter. *shrug*

It seems like a simple situation. The error handling is wacky. Joomla URL's should be throwing 404's, not be redirected to /. THe 404.php isn't even being called.

    Anyone?

I did a Google search (wordpress.org search didn't turn this up that I saw) and it lead me to the codex where I found:

"What happens if I switch to a theme that does not have a 404.php file?
Visitors clicking on a broken link will just see a copy of the home page of your WordPress site (index.php), but the URL they see will be the URL of the broken link. "

I added lines to the htaccess to point to this WP 404.php and now get a WP 404 page for some of the links.

HOWEVER, for most of the Joomla links in the Google search results, it still goes to the home page. Is there a way to fix this?

I thought to look at my error log. I have "File does not exist" for these times that the web page is redirected from a Joomla URI to the WP home page. There are no error numbers for me to correlate that text to a numbered error though.

EDIT: Looking at my error log again, I have the same entries of "File does not exist" for 404 errors I got when I tested the 404.php & htaccess. So, http://mysite.com/11111 returns a WP 404 error and http://mysite.com/?option=com_joomgallery&func=detail&id=52&Itemid=9 for instance, returns the WP home page.

    Can this be fixed?
