Stopping spam posts and changing user roles (5 posts)

I'm one of the admins of http://www.occupytacoma.org. Over the past few days, we have been getting 50 or even almost 100 spam posts. Akismet does not stop them, because it appears to be only for comment spam.

Right now, when one registers with the site, one automatically becomes a contributor. I was trying to figure out how I can change a newly registered user to "subscriber" instead of contributor. I was looking through the settings and could not see it. I'm sure it's there and I've just overlooked it.

I also wanted to know if there is a plugin that reports these spammers similar to Akismet. Is there a plugin that will enable me ban users while looking at the PENDING posts?

    Regards,
    Alan OldStudent

The default user role is editable in Settings > General.

You can review other methods outside of askimet here
