Stop keeping track of post changes

Every time a post is edited, it duplicates the post in the database. This cause for very a large database (every post contains about 1000 words).

I want to know if it would be possible to disable this so that ONLY the original post is edited (and no new one created). If it can be done, how? If not, why not?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
