Otto's good news (http://wordpress.org/support/topic/how-to-upload-a-pdf-file-into-a-post-or-page?replies=25) gets me to the point of seeing the LINK, but it does not let visitor see the pdf IN THE PAGE.
Is there a way to do this? I'm using 2.7.1
Your detailed reply very welcome!
Brian
First, if you are using version 2.7.1 of WordPress, you should seriously consider upgrading. That is very old and certainly a security risk.
Second, there's no fool proof way to display the actual pdf "in the page". That is browser dependent. One option would be to make a .jpg of the .pdf, and upload that as well. Then make the .jpg *link* to the .pdf.

Thanks for the replies / recommendations.
When I upgrade from 2.7.1 to the current version - are there functionality changes on the back end / visible changes to viewers?
Just a note on those links. The first may not be supported in the latest version of WP, and the second is I believe not supported in the latest version of WP, as the embed media button was removed. So mileage may vary.
There are definitely a lot of changes since that version when upgrading, so you may want to look into what has changed. Definitely be sure to follow proper upgrading proceedures.
