   Is it possible to grant authors access to statpress somehow?

   looking at the code of Statpress, the level of access is set to level_8. It doesn't look like its possible through an admin interface, but by changing this to a lower level in the code (such as level_2) you would be able to grant authors access.

   Hi, check "Options" page and set "Minimum capability to view stats" as you need!

   Much better than StatPress :) And actively maintained and supported!
