Static Page Non-Blog Site (10 posts)

    I'm at my wits end.
I'm not a web developer, but I'm computer literate and own a few websites. I usually just tweak themes here and there.

Now I'm trying to make a non-blog site. I want to the first page that users go to, to look just like the Twitter log in page. Full screen image as a background, with a small box with form. After the user submits the information I want to go to another static page, with other forms. Eventually the information will just be mailed to me.

I can't even start this. I've gone from wordpress, to dreamweaver, to rapidweaver, and now back to wordpress. I can't find themes, and I can't find information to help me get to step one to start me off on this. Like I said, I'm not a programmer, I just look up what I need to know to tweak things here and there. However, I'm finding this @#?!$ impossible.

    Please help.

To create this in WordPress you need to set the homepage to use a static page: http://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_a_Static_Front_Page and put a form on that page.

For the form functionality, have a look at the plugins in the plugin directory first as there may be one that suits your needs there: http://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?q=forms I know that Gravity forms (a commercial GPL plugin) has features that might be useful such as multi-page forms and conditional fields as I have a GF dev license which I use for anything where I need a form. An alternative plugin from the plugins directory may also have similar features.

Chris Coyier wrote about achieving a full screen background image at http://css-tricks.com/perfect-full-page-background-image Creating a child theme of one of the default themes or another theme from the themes directory should enable you to reduce & simplify the elements that appear on the page.

I have a static front page, I've cut and pasted a bunch of things from that Chris Coyier page all to no avail. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, It's above my level.

Could you link the page with the issue?

There's nothing on the page yet. It's just blank.
    I litererally can't get this started. I need a theme (I'm assuming).

What is the code of your static page?

I've erased it, I've tried the code that was on this page: http://css-tricks.com/perfect-full-page-background-image

Could you copy all of the code of your page and paste it into PasteBin and link us that?

Right now I have the BlankSlate theme installed by http://tidythemes.com/. That's it. There's no extra code. I've tried adding the code I mentioned before to a WP page, but nothing.

Note: I realize that I'm the worst kind of person to help right now. I'm usually not such an idiot with computer type things. Sorry.
