static page - cannot choose one (2 posts)

I would like to be able to make my home page static. I have read the posts here on how to go to settings>reading for the front page displays. However, when I am in this section and choose the static page option for the front page, there is a dropdown to select the front page. In this dropdown, there is only one selection which is "about". The page I want to make static is in the "home' category.

If I then go to my categories section and look at my categories, it doesn't even show "about". It does show "home" and that there is one post in it.

Can someone please tell me how to go about getting the one post I have in the "home" category to be the ONLY post that shows on the home page?

    thanks!

You could put that post's content in a Page and then make the page the static page via Administration > Settings > Reading.

Or you could use the 'Stick this post to the front page' in the Visibility section of the Publish module when you write/edit a post.

Or you could use a plugin like Advanced Category Excluder to control what categories are displayed.

Or you could modify your loop to include a specific category using the template tag, query_posts(), and the cat= parameter.
