Special chars in Post NOT converting to html entities

Hello. I have a wordpress blog in portuguese and I am havin g aproblem with special characters. It seems that wordpress is not converting the special accents I use in blog titles and onthe post. I have done some homework:

-Searching the foruns I saw many ho had the opposite problem. Their blog was converting it automatically as it should by default. Mine not, how do I reenable it?

-It seems to have something to do with that fucntion wpTexturizer. Should I change some code to reactivate it?

-I am typing directly on the wordpress wiwsiwyg editor using firefox in windows, so it cannot be a text editor issue.

-the titles displays the code allright but the post does not. When looking at the source code, the title preserved the original special char, while the post converted them all to the funny not found black square. The safer bet would get them both to html entities so it could display in any browser..
