I just noticed, the latest WordPress uses span with the bold/italics in styles instead of em and strong tags.
I think that's a bad idea, because people with screen-readers lose out (but they don't with strong/em).
But even if I'm wrong, I want WordPress to use strong/em. How do I turn this thingy off?! (I don't mind recoding bits and pieces if I have to.)
Where exactly did you notice it? Isn't it your theme that uses span?

Nope, in my posts, when I click Bold or Edit in the rich-text editor, it inserts spans with styles instead of em and strong tags. I want to turn it off!
I am clueless - I never use the RTE, find it useless.
I guess you could disable the RTE, use the real editor and see if it does the same thing (I don't think it does....)

Yep, turning off the RTE seems to do it.
