[resolved] Spammy website hits (3 posts)

    Hi all,

Over the past four days or so I have been noticing a lot of spammy traffic coming from strange websites. My domain is http://mattwarrell.com and when I go to investigate these pages, my link doesn't appear on them or 404s.

They all seem to have similar themes within well-known websites - like 'home loans' on MSN.com or WordPress.org or foxnews.com or CNN etc. But obviously these all bring up 404s. For example - http://apple.com/advantagerentacar

The other day I had 491 hits but I counted only around 60 of these were from sources that made sense and have backlinks on.

I'm worried whatever or whoever is doing this is going to get my website penalised by Google. Anyone have any advice on this?

    Thanks!

    Matt

Google doesn't penalise you for inbound links or traffic because you have no control over that whatsoever. The worst that they'd do is just not count it in their calculations.

When you see things like this, it's most likely SPAM'ers that are using faked referrer fields in their requests. It's extremely easy to do and you can make up any page that you like. If you're concerned about it I'd suggest looking at one of the security plugins that are available, but if the faslified visitors aren't trying to get to your login page or admin area then Iw wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks, that relaxes me a lot.

I have akismet but I might look into what else I can implement to secure more than just my site from comment spam. Just had to hear there's no hurry on doing it.

    Thanks again!
