• I realize that the creator of my added 3 links to my footer after I got the site looking to my satisfaction. I went to try to remove, NOT their Site reference mind you but the spammy links. Once I did that the page broke.
How can I find where the point is that this reference is made in the code and remove it?
As I said I do not mind the theme creator’s link or their name on my site as they did the work. I just want to remove the spam links.
    Thanks in Advance.

  • Either you made a mistake editing the file(s) or the theme is built such that it breaks when the spammy links are removed. Its hard to say based on the information given. I guess I’d advise looking around for functions that check file sizes, check for the presence of other functions… that kind of thing. Or just don’t use use a theme that is apparently intended to be a not so subtle trojan for spam links.

Good points all around. However I really like the theme. ‘Let me be more clear. I deleted the spammy links in the footer. Then my page returned when reloaded saying somthing like, please put the links back into the footer and the site will work again.
Of course there was nothing in the download or page where I got it that let me know that this would be the case, so I do not mind trying to remove them.
What would a function look like, the one that you are describing? What is a key word I can look for?
    Thanks!

probably be something in functions.php…… hard to say exactly what it would look like, but It most likely would NOT look like a wordpress function…..

Of course if it’s coded with a lot of checks in it….you are plain not going to be able to use the theme….

I would still like to try. Do you have any example of what to look for within the functions page? I looked and nothing jumps out at me although I do not code WP at all.
    TIA

Does anyone know and can post some of the code that is commonly used for this?

This thread has some of the kinds of things you’ll have to look for, but this is by no means exhaustive.

Thanks apl! I will start with this!

I got that problem before, usually I just uninstall…hehe…
Good plugin will give you the option to remove the links…

    Hi all,

After getting sicked of so called free WordPress themes with bunch of encrypted spammy links, I decided to spend a couple of days to set up cleanWPtheme.com. I decrypted all footer links of WordPress themes and share them at the site. Hopefully, you will like it too. Thanks.
