Support » Fixing WordPress » Spam registrations — how to address

  • I am getting many registrations to my blog that appear to be spam registrations. Akismet is keeping the spam off my blog, thank goodness, but it’s annoying to keep getting these registrations. Is there some way I can prevent this?

    Thanks!

  • Unless you actually need for people to be able to register, un-check “Anyone can register” at Dashboard > Settings > General.

Thank you so much! I just did that.

A question: What is the impact of my doing this? Are people going to get a “you can’t register” message of some sort? I’m not sure how people are registering, to be honest. I am using the Subscribe2 plugin, so I get how that works, but the “registration” is a mystery to me. I don’t think I set it up so I’m assuming it’s something that comes with WP.

    Thanks again!!

Yes, maybe so, but the registration link will never show up on your site. So, that message will only show for people trying to go behind your back anyway.

If you decide to delete unnecessary user accounts from your Dashboard, however, an e-mail notification might go out. I have had that happen, but that might have been from a plugin I was using at the time. So before you might delete any accounts, make one for yourself and then delete it to see about that. As an alternative, I think you can set user accounts to “No Role” and block login.

    Excellent. Thanks again!

A lot of the spammy looking subscriptions are from o2.pl, as in: donekkk.1992@o2.pl

Does that mean anything to you? Just curious.

That is from Poland, and you can read a little about that here:

Just like with people, I try to not stereotype countries while trying to sort legitimate users from spammers and such.
