    Akismet or Spam Karma 2

I would like to add one more tool I've found very useful. I run this with Akismet, SK2 and Bad Behavior.

    Comment Spam Plugin 1.1:

Hi. I blog at a website, though I'm not the webmaster/administrator.

I'm trying to cope with spam. I think the best way is to disallow comments for each blog posts, a couple days after the blog post is written.

I therefore want to disallow comments for about a year's worth of blog posts. Can I do this for the blog posts that I've written, without painstakingly going to each old blog post and disallowing comments one blog post at a time??? This would take me weeks!

    my problem is not that i'm getting spam, but that all legitimate comments from people other than myself are getting marked as spam. for a while i thought no one liked me and so they weren't visiting my sight, but then i looked in the database today and found a whole bunch of comments i'd never seen and they were all marked as spam. below are my settings;

    Usual settings for an article:
    * Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.)UNCHECKED
    * Allow link notifications from other Weblogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)CHECKED
    * Allow people to post comments on the article CHECKED

    E-mail me whenever:
    * Anyone posts a comment CHECKED
    * A comment is held for moderation CHECKED

    Before a comment appears:
    * An administrator must approve the comment (regardless of any matches below) UNCHECKED
    * Comment author must fill out name and e-mail CHECKED
    * Comment author must have a previously approved comment CHECKED

    Can anyone help?

    I run Akismet, and Bad Behavior(All latest version). But whenever I activate SK2, I gets error in comment form, the latest error is as quoted under;

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/rok/public_html/blog/wp-content/plugins/SK2/sk2_second_chance.php:2) in /home/rok/public_html/blog/wp-content/plugins/Bad-Behavior/bad-behavior/screener.inc.php on line 8

Rok, make sure neither file has a blank space at the end of it or at the start. That is normally the cause.

And about SK2.... Check the SK2 Logs tab to see what is causing the comments to be flagged as spam.

Jmas, please list all/any anti-spam plug-in(s) you are running on your blog.

    Ferrylodge, check out this plug-in:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Auto_shutoff_comments

    "Autoclose comments after 90 days."

MHC, I believe this is the plug-in you mentioned. :)

    Or:

    http://frenchfragfactory.net/ozh/archives/2005/02/02/wordpress-plugin-auto-moderate-comments/

"Auto moderate comments when a post is older than XX days"

Dutchfalcon and Nurice, contact tech support here:

    http://akismet.com/contact/

Christiaan, WP-Gatekeeper is weak since the spammer can get your list of questions in basically no time. Since I doubt you have more than 100 questions, if that many. ;)

Jabesse, thanks for the info about blocking proxies.

Saywhaaa, that does seem very odd. I would redownload wordpress and reinstall, just to be safe. Also, delete your database. So start over. Should not be an issue since you said you just created it. Even though, back up everything first.

war59312 - I have no blank space at the end of the file. But I will work on your advice and will get back, once it has been done.

    Rok, good luck buddy!

    Here is another new plug-in:

    http://www.justinshattuck.com/bannage/

    # Ban comments by:

    1. URI
    2. Username
    3. Email Address
    4. IP Address

i get a lot of spam, but that worries me less than the friends and family who get caught in the crossfire (Ham). is there any way to whitelist by IP?

    i see this:
    http://incoherentbabble.com/2005/11/20/enhanced-akismet-plugin-version-106b5

    is that the best option?

    codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Auto_shutoff_comments

    "Autoclose comments after 90 days."

MHC, I believe this is the plug-in you mentioned. :)

Thanks, war59312! I have installed it and it works very well. Since I posted, only one spam made it through but was held in moderation. Fed the bloody thing to SpamKarma and Akismet and all is well in the my blog once again. :^D

Oh and, btw, by default that plugin is set at 21 days. Thought it was a bit short so I lengthened it to 30 in the plugin editor.

Sunburntkamel, looks good to me. Thanks for that one. ;)

MHC, Yeah I guess he lowered it for whatever reason. ;)

I use both plug-ins. I moderate all comments that are older than 30 days and then block all comments after 90. Works great!

Akismet was working but lately I'm getting a lot of spam comments that aren't being detected as spam - although they clearly are. Is anyone else experiencing problems with Akismet not picking up spam comments?

My AKISMET spam has stopped automatically taking spam and the count is stuck at 9299.

In the first message, they said that Bad Behavior would not work with GoDaddy. That posting was 9 months ago -- is this still true? BB sounds like the ideal answer to my problems with what now seems to be trackback spam.

It is almost like people have stock in these. No, I'm not seriously suggesting that... SK2, BB and Akismet may be favorites but after installing them I found they were blocking a lot of my real readers in addition to possibly blocking spammers. False positives are not acceptable. Captchas and math have been more effective for me. I also don't like the central server design.

No. Apparently whatever the issue was has been corrected.
