[resolved] Spam filters causing WP pages problems (8 posts)

    Hi there,

I am fairly new to WP, but learning as I go. I have been having 2 main problems:

    1) I have been having big problems when editing pages already created. Sometimes if I click to edit a page I can only see the 'HTML' dialog, even when the 'Visual' tag is click. I have sometimes been able to move the page several times (ie. make it a sub-page, then parent) and it will return, but sometimes not, so I have delete the whole thing and start again from scratch. Any ideas why it might be doing this?

    2) I want to install a spam filter plug in. I have tried Akismet, and SI CAPTCHA anti-spam, but both have caused me problems in being able to edit pages at all. If either have been activated and I click to edit a page, the page appears to start to load, and then stops, so there is no text area, or 'bold', 'italic' buttons etc. etc. Sometimes there is the 'update' button on the right, but that is it, but most pages I click on the was only the blue-bar at the top and that was it.

Unfortunately, I have to say that I have found WP quite unreliable in these respects so far. I cannot even do an auto-update as it just seems to hang, so I did a manual install in the end, which took an entire afternoon, so I won't be updating again!

I am happy with the way the site is working at the moment, but as I said I just want to get a spam filter installed that works with WP and allows me full control over my pages.

The other plug-ins that I am using at the moment are as follows:
    - Contact Form 7
    - Really Simple CAPTCHA
    - WP-DBManager
    - WP-Members
    - WP Simple PayPal Shopping Cart
    (these are all active).

If anyone can help, or recommend anything, it will be much appreciated.

    Thanks very much.

    Justin

akismet specifically shouldn't (as almost certainly doesn't) interact with that page, which would suggest you have issues elsewhere.

Have you tried use the default twentyten theme, and deactivated all plugins. Does that make any difference?

    Hi Rich,

Thanks for replying. I have done as you said and converted the site to the default 2010 theme; deactivated all plugins, which solves problem 1). I then activated Akismet (OK), then tried each of the other plugins with Akismet to see if one was conflicting with this, and it seems to be Contact Form7. I have activated all of the other plugins, and converted it back to my theme, without activating CF7 and this seems to be OK.

I did try another form builder (I think it was called FormBuilder?!) before CF7, but this was not compatible with WP-Members, so was told to try Cf7.

Do you or anyone else know of a form builder plugin that would be compatible with Akismet and my other plugins (listed in my 1st post above)???

Thank you in advance for your help.

CF7 should be, try contacting the developer via email, or start a new thread.

Ok, I have posted a 'not working' thread through CF7, so hopefully I will get there, thanks for your help!

    Hi Rich!

I would just like to say thank you the help you gave me. I can now say that I am one very happy person...as of a few moments ago, it is all sorted, all working, all automatically updated and everything! And it was all down to one thing...I had PHP4 and needed PHP5, as soon as it was upgraded it was like flicking a switch and magic-occurred!

Could be something for others to think about who are experiencing problems?

Anyway, thank you again, much appreciated.

    Just
