   Recently my blog started sending me email notifications for spam comments.

   This happens in spite of the fact that Akismet is (still) appropriately marking and deleting these comments as spam.

   This began when I deactivated the Nextgen Gallery plugin. (Prior to this, Akismet deleted spam and I did not receive spam comment notifications.)

   I get 50-75 spam comments every day (which is just one reason why I am so thankful for akismet!). Receiving the email notifications for these is a huge pain, especially since Akismet is otherwise working properly.

   Has anyone encountered this? Any ideas why this is happening?

   If you visit the Discussion settings page in your dashboard under the Settings menu there are a few options as far as comments and email go. Have you tried going there to see if something is checked?

   Yes, I looked, and all the boxes are checked the same as they were before this mess began- that is, both "email me whenever someone posts a comment" and "email me whenever a comment is held in moderation" are checked.

   Ideally I would like to continue receiving emails when I receive (legitimate) comments.
