Spam and Closed Comments

There are three posts on my site that receive nearly all of the comment spam. I thought that closing comments would result in their not admitted into the moderation queue, but it hasn’t. There’s no discernible difference. Shouldn’t closing comments for a post mean that no comments should be “awaiting moderation” for that post?
