   anyone know why someone would be trying to fetch all my date based archive pages so rapidly that it causes excessive load on my server as it tries to respond to these requests that are all coming in within a couple of seconds?

   I'm returning a redirect to them now, because I installed a plugin to disable the date based archives, thinking that might eventually make them go away...

   is this someone just scraping for content?

   Ban the IP address in your htaccess

   It's coming from a variety of ip addresses... banning them would be a never ending process... I'm wondering if others have seen this...

   could this be a bot or something, that is working through compromised servers/PCs, or through open proxies?

   maybe there's a way to ban "excessive" accesses like this. No legitimate user should need to fetch and read 9 months of wordpress archives all in one second! (especially since I disabled them and each of those pages all returns a redirect to the homepage of the site)
