    it redirect me to the post which start with b. it should shows 404 error page. but redirect me to www. my website.com/b-blah-blah-post.
    What is the reason? how to correct it?

    Hi yogesh_gamer,

    That's a very good question. I just checked on one of my WordPress installations, and the same exact issue is occurring. I've been unsuccessful in finding official documentation on this, you can find official documentation on WordPress 404s here:

    I forgot to mention, I am using Twenty Eleven Theme.

    See Creating_an_Error_404_Page. But do not edit the Twenty Eleven theme. It is the default WordPress 3.2 theme and having access to an unedited version of the theme is vital when dealing with a range of site issues.

    Create a child theme for your changes. Once your child theme is active, add your new 404.php template to the child theme.

    Thanks for your reply. But is there any single steps to edit 404.php file to correct my problem?
    404.php file may be real problem.

    Creating_an_Error_404_Page is for creating a new 404 page. I just wanted to solve my little problem.

    What happens if you disable pretty permalinks, and then attempt to navigate to an invalid URL?

    When testing and troubleshooting, I am able to replicate the issue at hand. My own permalink structure is set to:

    /%category%/%postname%/

    WordPress is smart about 404s, and the only time the theme's 404 page actually loaded was when I misspelling BOTH the category and the postname. If you misspell one or the other, the 404.php theme file does not load. I know this because I added this code to the top of the file, and it only loaded when both items were spelled wrong:

    die("this is the 404.php");

    ... I've been digging through the WordPress code for about an hour now, but I cannot pinpoint where exactly WordPress is doing this smart redirect at.

    Any ideas?

    @Chip Bennett
    I apply default permalink and its somewhat working. Its showing me this error
    Not Found
    The requested URL /a was not found on this server.
    Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    But I want Month and Name permalink. Help me Sir
    So that I can launch my website.
