Hi Hilary,
You can code something like this to get out the word “twitter” and replace it with the icon
a {
text-indent: -9000px;
background: url('img/twitter-icon.png');
}
Good luck!
Thanks. I just tried it and it changed the whole background to the twitter icon! lol. Any other ideas?
Hi Hilary,
You can post link to your site. I think it will be helpful.
Hi Hilary,
try adding this
li#menu-item-816 {
float: right;
}
li#menu-item-816 a {
display: block;
background: url('img/twitter.png') no-repeat;
text-indent: 9999px;
width: 90px;
}
Do I add it in the CSS (style sheet) or in the CSS manager plugin?
Oh!. You should add this to child theme style.css file.
I don’t know if I have a child theme. Sorry, this is rather new to me.
to create child theme
you can read this article.
it’s basic and easy to create.
All your customization should add to this child theme file because it won’t lose when the theme update.
http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/theme-development/child-themes-basics-and-creating-child-themes-in-wordpress/
let me know if you get trouble. don’t hestinate.
Good luck!
You can use the custom CSS manager for adding CSS – you don’t need a child theme if you are only making CSS changes.
should i create a child theme though? In case the theme gets updated, so I won’t lose everything i’ve done?
If you’re only making CSS changes, custom CSS is fine and won’t get overwritten. BUT, it often happens that you realize later that you want to do something that requires modifying theme files – and in that case, you DO need a child theme. So it’s certainly not a bad thing to do it now – and then you’ll be all set!
Great thanks guys. Should there already have been a wp-content file created in my finder? I’ve searched and can’t find one…. Or can I just create a text doc and call it style.css?
(thanks for bearing with me)
wp-content file created in my finder?
It’s on your server – that’s where you’ll need to upload the child theme to – using FTP.
Oh one more important thing is that you need to use a plain text editor (not Word) to create the style.css file.
