I'm going to cry soon. :) I just can't figure this out and I keep hopping around the documentation and I can't seem to find anything that tells me what to do next.

So, it's installed on my server. It looks like what it's supposed to look like, etc. yay.

But now, how do I import all of my old posts (from a wordpress blog)? How do I connect what's on my server to my admin panel so that I can write posts and post them? How do I even FIND my admin panel? Seriously. I keep seeing that the admin panel is great but I have no idea how to find it. I'm logged in but I must be blind because I don't see anything that says Admin Panel. Is it the same one I was using for my .com blog?

I usually am ok with tech stuff but this is making me feel dumb as a box of rocks. Am I missing the document that says: Step 1 - Install, Step 2 - connect to admin panel (and how/where), Setp 3 - import old posts, and so on. I see lots of different documents but I can't figure out how they are supposed to flow from one to the next. I'm drowing in info but I can't seem to find instructions.

    I'm begging you...please help me... :)

    Thanks.

What is your blog address. I know of your wordpress.COM blog, but what is the address of your self hosted, already installed WordPress blog?

    1. Visit your wordpress.com blog at http://vagabondetteva.wordpress.com/wp-login.php and login and do Manage->Export.
    2. Visit http://amvirtualassistant.com/blog/wp-login.php and login, then do Manage->Import->WordPress and use the file you created in Step 1.

Thanks so much! How long should that take because it's been importing for about 15 minutes and the file isn't anywhere near that big...

Depends on how many images (if you are bringing over images) there are, I suppose.

Unfortunately, no way yet to do that.

Might try breaking the xml into pieces and uploading each piece.

Oh also forgot, you could try to do a gz compression on your file and use that for uploading reference.

Just so you know you are not alone:

    [edit]
    http://www.7-zip.org/ does gzip compression

Well, it's nice to know I'm not alone, but it doesn't really help. :)

I've broken it up in to pieces. I'm currently trying to upload a single post. It's been trying for at least 10 minutes - no go.

I'm starting to think it'll just be easier to move them manually, post by post and say screw the comments.

Another ugly choice is install WordPress locally, then backup the database and restore that to your hosted account.

blech. That doesn't sound fun at all. :) I think I'll must move them over. There aren't THAT many and I wanted to re-org the categories anyway. Thanks for your help.
