I have spent half my day trying to figure out how to make a smooth scroll from a link in my header to an anchor tag in the middle of a given post or archive of categories. Can this be done?

I am proud that despite being a filmmaker alegric to coding, I managed to create a wordpress theme from scratch. I designed my header very big, with links to the categories of my posts. I would like that when the links are clicked, the header smoothly scrolled out of view to show the posts of a given category. Can I make a smooth scroll from a link in header.php to an anchor in archive.php?
